CLOUD SERVICES FOR EDUCATION.
What is Cloud computing?
Very simply, Cloud services is an umbrella term for using IT systems over the internet. Rather than having a computer (server) in your premises, which you have to pay to buy, pay to replace, pay to upgrade etc, you use a part of somebody else’s server to do that job. This allows service providers to lower costs and keep all their clients up to date.
For example, lets look at a school library.
A school has a decently provisioned library and they use a computer system to keep track of the books. The computer stores this information, via an installed software application, on to the schools main server. From time to time, the developer of the library software sends out updates to the application – this could include an updated book list for example. The school needs an IT person to install the updates and keep the system running. They also need to ensure the server is regularly backed up otherwise they could lose the library system information and will have no way of knowing what books they have and who is borrowing them.
This is an ideal use for the cloud. Instead of needing a server and software, the school simply sign up to a cloud library system. All updates, fixes, patches and improvements are handled by the supplier. They also ensure the data is backed up and ready to use. Now the school simply need to use a computer with internet access to connect to the library system.
